Boxing up

Boxes are the foundation of a good move. As such, you should not cut any corners when it comes to the quantity, quality and variety of boxes that you acquire and use for your move. The type of cardboard boxes that you choose to use for your move will depend on a number of factors. This includes the weight of the items, the type of items you’re moving, the number of people you have helping you move and the way that you prefer to pack. Never underestimate the value of a good collection of boxes during a move. When choosing and packing your boxes, there are a few useful things to keep in mind. Allied moving boxes

Weight for the right box

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing the right moving boxes is the weight of the items you are moving. If you have a lot of heavy items, then you will want to use small boxes to ensure they do not compromise the structural integrity of the box or become too heavy to be carried. If, however, you have a mountain of light items - like pillows and blankets - then you can use large boxes and pack them as tight as you want or take advantage of vacuum seal bags to improve the time and space efficiency of moving day. Whatever the items you have, ensure that they are making the best use of the space available without becoming too heavy for the box or for yourself.

Specialty boxing

A box may not seem particularly special, and yet there is a special box for almost every situation. While most cardboard boxes are categorised simply as small, medium or large, there is an impressive miscellany of customised specialty boxes designed for just about any moving challenge or niche item you could imagine. So if you find yourself unable to fit your belongings into a standard moving box, consider getting yourself some boxes that have been specifically designed for that purpose. This includes:
  • Wine boxes & inserts
  • Archive boxes
  • Slider boxes (for televisions or paintings)
  • Wardrobe boxes

Don’t box yourself in

Choosing just one type of box for your move cuts off your options, increases the chances of damage during transit and boxes you into an inefficient method of moving. When it comes to acquiring your moving boxes, diversity is key. Get yourself a range of sizes and shapes to ensure that you can match the right box for the right item. For example, if you will have a lot of assistance during your move then you can afford to choose larger boxes and pack them a bit heavier. This is unlikely to cause you any problems as many hands make light work. Alternatively, if you will be moving without extra assistance, then you’ll want to make sure you avoid too many large boxes and don’t fill them too densely to avoid giving yourself an injury. The important thing is to understand the context in which you will be moving and to choose a variety of boxes to give yourself maximum flexibility.

Box tight, box right

How you pack your boxes is just as important as the type of boxes that you choose. When selecting the right boxes for your move, make sure you keep in mind that you don’t want to leave any excess space in each box. When you leave space in a moving box, it provides room for your belongings to become dislodged, to rattle against other items and to potentially incur damage during transit. There are two important tips to remember when packing your boxes: box tight - don’t leave any extra space, and box right - pack the heavier items at the bottom with the lighter items on top. We recommend using crumpled packing paper (butchers paper) as cushioning at the top and bottom of every box, this helps fill voids and limit movement during transit.

Packaging

Boxes are a great way to transport lots of items, but when it comes to ensuring that the important and delicate items are protected during transit you are going to need some packaging equipment. Packaging equipment such as bubble wrap and packing paper are invaluable during the moving process, but are only as effective as the person using them. Therefore we have provided some helpful tips below for getting the most out of the essential packaging items.

Bubble wrap

Bubble wrap has become ubiquitous in the moving industry. However, there are some instances where bubble wrap might not be the preferred packing material. Bubble wrap is typically used for protecting fragile items during a move but often isn’t used correctly which can lead to breakage. The key to using bubble wrap well is to wrap items with the bubble side facing inwards, to use enough layers to provide a cushion of protection, to wrap it tight enough to secure the item and fastening the end of it with some sturdy tape.

Packing paper

Packing paper is the professionals preference when it comes to cushioning and protecting breakable items. Packing paper can be used to wrap dishes, pad glasses and cushion just about anything that you may need to move. Just make sure you use enough packing paper and crumple each of the layers to provide a sufficient cushion.

Packing paper becomes sturdier, more resilient and durable when crumpled, making it the perfect cushioning medium for fragile and delicate items when moving. The added benefit of this packing material is that it is biodegradable making it the more eco-friendly option when moving.

Stretch plastic wrap

Stretchy plastic wrap is a highly valuable resource during a move. It allows you to keep lots of loose items secured together, secure draws closed and protect furniture from stains and damage. However, it’s important to remember that plastic wrap does not provide any cushioning, it is best used as a tool for securing items in place. We recommend using plastic wrap mainly for securing drawers closed and protecting soft furniture. For items requiring added layers of protection, a combination of plastic wrap and packing paper or bubble wrap can be highly effective.

Important accessories

While boxes and packaging equipment may seem like everything you need, it’s important not to overlook the value of small packing accessories. Items like heavy duty packing tape can seem obvious, but forgetting it can mean the difference between a smooth moving day and a stressful one. Below we have listed the most important packing accessories that you won’t want to move without.
  • Heavy duty packaging tape (and tape dispenser!)
  • Permanent markers (helps labelling and organisation)
  • Stanley knife, or similar (useful on both ends of the move)
  • Padlock
  • Moving bags
  • Bed covers/mattress bags
  • Moving blankets
  • Garbage bags
  • Ziploc bags

Moving day supplies

When it comes to preparing for your moving day, focusing purely on the packing supplies could mean overlooking some of the other important elements of your move. This includes your mode of transportation, any additional assistance you may require and, of course, cleaning supplies. Leaving your old home clean and getting your new one looking great is part of a successful move. However, cleaning two houses may be the last thing you want to think about after organising every other aspect of your move. Luckily among our wide range of specialty moving services we offer cleaning and handyman services, so that you can give yourself the time to focus on the things that matter.
